Public service media presents election priorities to European Parliament

On 18 April, the EBU presented its EU elections campaign to German MEP and Chair of the European Parliament’s Culture Committee Sabine Verheyen at the Legal and Policy Assembly.

Richard Burnley, Director of Legal and Policy, EBU, said: “Over the last 5 years, the European Parliament has shown that, at a time when there are so many threats to media freedom, they will stand with independent public service media to safeguard unbiased news and information. We thank them for their good work in the last mandate, notably in the Media Freedom Act."

Wouter Gekiere, Head of the EBU’s Brussels Office, added: “Today we shared public service media’s priorities for the EU elections and next mandate with the European Parliament. We highlighted the unfinished battles and possible threats on the horizon. Notably, generative AI and big tech’s relationship with the media are high priorities. Most of all, we need to the EU to commit to strong enforcement of media freedom and independent, well-funded public service media to continue to support our democracy.”

The EBU’s calls on EU decision makers to: safeguard media freedom; ensure prominence for general interest media; hold big tech accountable; and develop legal guardrails for media with AI. The EBU further reminds EU policymakers of the contribution of public service media via offering balanced news and journalism, technological innovation, economic investment to the EU.

The EBU’s Legal and Policy Assembly, gathers around a hundred legal experts from the EBU membership to focus on the political goals of the organization.
