Public Service Media Contribution to Democracy
25 April 2018 - EBU
In this piece of research, Dr. Stephen Cushion, from the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Culture, reflects on how public service media (PSM)'s news output contributes to a stronger democracy. His work illustrates that news can have a democratic value and PSM's distinctiveness in providing news turns these organizations into a unique asset for a healthy democracy. Even people who do not consume public media's news benefit from their output given its spill-over effects and how they raise standards across the industry.
